Don’t let the healthy habits you worked all summer to establish be lost with the onset of cooler months and shorter days. Remember these four food myths to feel healthy all year long.

Four Food Myths

  1. You can eat as much healthy fat as you want.Just because something is good for you doesn’t mean you don’t have to pay attention to serving size. Yes, healthy fats, such as avocado, olive oil and nuts, are healthier alternatives to ice cream and cookies. But, even healthy snacks have calories, which need to be accounted for.
  2. Fresh always beats frozen. Well, yes … and no. Vegetables and produce that are frozen are done so immediately upon harvest, which ensures nutrients aren’t lost. On the other hand, fresh produce and vegetables can lose nutrients, especially if they have to travel long distances to reach your local supermarket. The best bet is to buy fresh AND locally.
  3. Dark bread is always better. Be careful here, as some dark bread has caramel coloring and no added benefits. Reading the label is key. Look for “whole grain” or “100 percent whole wheat” when shopping, indicating the bread is made from refined wheat and contains almost double the fiber.
  4. All natural means all good. The label “all natural” is not regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), so be thoughtful when buying products with this claim attached. If you’re looking for items you know have been grown within specific guidelines, you’re probably better off buying organic, as that term is regulated by the USDA so growers have to follow certain protocols.
